Weddings In Las Vegas Are Far More Fun

My husband and I are not what you would call conventional types; in fact, we scoff at convention. For us, a Las Vegas wedding was obviously the only way to go.

We don’t celebrate the so-called “Hallmark holidays,” figuring that we really don’t need to be encouraging retailers to ambush unsuspecting shoppers with schlocky Valentine’s Day junk while the Christmas merchandise is still warm on the shelves. We celebrated our engagement with a few drinks with our closest friends and a small get together at our house featuring a Zombie-themed engagement cake that I made myself with a few cake mixes, marzipan, some half-melted action figures (it takes precision to do that without actually setting those things on fire) and lots of red food coloring. We’d decided that we should get married just to legalize things and get certain parents and in laws off our backs, but there’s no way either of us would cave and go for the full church ceremony. Las Vegas weddings don’t have to be tacky, but if you want to have fun while taking care of the legalities, it’s the way to roll.

Of course we’d seen countless movies that featured Las Vegas weddings. Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz’s “What Happens In Vegas” is one of the more recent ones, and I have to admit that the potential for zaniness appealed to my somewhat twisted sense of humor. My better half was bound and determined to have an Elvis-themed Los Vegas wedding, but I managed to talk him down from that one when I explained that I had no intention of wearing sideburns when I walked down the aisle. We saw the Viva Los Vegas Wedding Chapel (www.vivalasvegasweddings.com) on a segment on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, and we both knew that this was the place, the provider of the ultimate in Los Vegas weddings.

Little did I know that my parents were secretly hoping that we’d choose a Las Vegas wedding. I was sure that my mom and dad -as button down conservative as it gets- would be pushing for the local church. They did, a bit, but the effort didn’t seem to be there. After we were married, my mom confessed that they had been looking forward to a ceremony that was spontaneous and fun, as opposed to rather stern and officious, and the 300 days a year of sunshine the city enjoys sure looked appealing to someone from Michigan facing a cold and dreary winter wedding. The fact that my rebellious streak had been turned against me took some of the wind out of my sails, but I still stand by my Los Vegas wedding as the perfect day.

Angela Whalen and her husband Rob knew that weddings in Las Vegas are a fun and creative alternative to traditional ceremonies. When Angela was looking for a way to top her Zombie-themed engagement party, only a Las Vegas wedding would do.
